10/28: Teaching, Yoga for Kids

 Playing a character helps young students stay engaged and actually enjoy the activity. They see everything as playing or a game. Kindergarten, Vol. 3 Dance Component: Movement skills and underlying principles Objectives: 1 Recognizes ways of moving various body parts 2 Explores aspect of shape with the body 3 Demonstrates moving in personal space, using large and small kinesphere 4 Explores nonlocomotor skills: bending, stretching, twisting, arching, turning, falling Competency: The student can solve locomotor and non-locomotor movement problems (walk slowly, run quickly, stop) by creating a short thematic interpretation that will demonstrate these movements Materials: speaker and music, colorful stars Activity: Learning about straddle stretch and “making a pizza”

 Why are music props important for dance teachers? - Props like rhythm sticks help students learn rhythm and counting while keeping them engaged, and music is fundamental to dance in every aspect. Speaker and playlist is one of the most important accessories needed in order to teach any dance class or to learn any choreography. Having the lyrics to music helps when teaching choreography and movements line up with the words.  Which scenarios would you use recorded songs like the one in the video? - I could use them if i was absent and needed to give material to a substitute teacher, or even as a fun break in the middle of a more technical class.  3 qualities to be a good inclusive dance teacher!  - creativity, clarity, commitment creativity: be aware of different needs and how to adapt to them clarity: say what you mean, sometimes less is more commitment: take time to understand your students and their needs

10/7 Teaching: Assessment

 Types of Assessment formative vs summative: evaluations along the way versus cumulative assessment  GROUP - Title: Ballet for First Grade - Date: 11/7/24 - Component: Personal Development - Objective: To use skills learned in last sessions to perform a dance - Competency: Student should be able to perform choreography to fullest extent with musicality and emotion, and be proud of what they’ve learned - Materials: Dance shoes, journal and pencil for corrections - Content: Review the routine they learned over the previous weeks - Activity: Talk about body parts and how they’re used throughout the routine they’ve learned/teach how they should be used, then perform routine in small groups and have students give each other corrections and compliments - Assessment: Full out performance for small audience  

9/30 Creative Dance Approach

Introduction: Introduce themselves (only for the first few lessons) and what they are thankful for/ the highlight of their day before the start of class.  Warmup: An in depth jazz warmup with upbeat music and dynamic stretching/movement- ex: lunges, splits, hamstring stretches, core work, etc. Theme: Each class’ theme will be to make the dancers have a well rounded skill set. Includes improv to have a good understanding of their body and how to move it in a non-structured way, choreography to understand how to lead a group and set dances, and an assessment to ensure they understood what was learned. Improv: Play upbeat music and have the dancers improv across the floor, helps the dancers understand their body, musicality, and how to travel when dancing. Choreographing: Let the dancers pair up/ small groups and choreograph a short phrase. Assessment: Do a small show and tell with the dances they made up. How can we make teaching dance more creative?  CREATIVITY - TWO MODES OF THINKING Convergent vs. Divergent thinking: Convergent- thinking that proposes a very direct approach that isn’t creative, Divergent- using creative and alternate way of thinking to come to solution. You need to both in order to create something so that you can make something that is original, thoughtful, and truly your own, but that still follows basic guidelines and a general base idea or style. Dopamine: neuro-modulator involved in motivation and helps us direct our attention towards things outside of ourselves. Many famous artists have schizophrenia, which is a result of extreme levels of dopamine. High levels of dopamine in the brain lead to more creativity, or divergent thinking.  Is it ADHD or having to move in order to learn?
